Product Description: Flocculants, or flocculating agents (also known as flocking agents), are chemicals that promote flocculation by causing colloids and other suspended particles in liquids to aggregate, forming a floc. Flocculants are used in water treatment processes to improve the sedimentation or filterability of small particles. For example, a flocculant may be used in swimming pool or drinking water filtration to aid removal of microscopic particles which would otherwise cause the water to be turbid (cloudy) and which would be difficult or impossible to remove by filtration alone. In this kit the student prepares two suspensions of dirty water. A flocculating agent is used in one causing it to clear up before the students eyes while the other remains cloudy. Kit includes:
- 1 Vial of Aluminum chlorohydrate
- 30g Sodium hydroxide
- 1 Plastic Pipette
- 2 bags of filtered dirt
- 1 pair of latex gloves
- Instructions
Items needed but not provided: 2 water bottles.
Safety Notes: Solid sodium hydroxide or solutions of sodium hydroxide (Used in drain cleaners) may cause chemical burns, permanent injury or scarring if it contacts unprotected human, or other animal, tissue. It may cause blindness if it contacts with the eye. Protective equipment such as rubber gloves, safety clothing and eye protection should always be used when handling the material or its solutions.
